Re: Mr Vaughan of Ennistymon now at Upper Ormond Quay. 1874

Hello again Sheila, I am delighted that I was of assistance in the rescue of Cornelius! Ballinagrave House was in Kilshanny parish but Ballinagrave isn't listed as a townland. Other families that lived in that house were the Thynnes and Glynns. Your Ellen O'Dwyer (Malley) had a brother John (inferre...

Re: Mr Vaughan of Ennistymon now at Upper Ormond Quay. 1874

Sheila, You have been busy as usual. Your contributions are great and always informative. Susan Mary Vaughan was the daughter of Patrick J O’Dwyer and brother of Edward (Ned), as you indicated. You already referenced this Patrick J O’Dwyer in your post regarding the woollen mills of Ennistymon. He w...

Re: Coolisteige Castle

Just a little more information on Captain William Vere Taylor of the 28th Regiment of Foot. Earlier posts give marriage details of Agnes and Kate Taylor, daughters of Captain William Vere Taylor of the 28th Regiment of Foot. There was a third daughter Dora, who married James McMahon (clergyman). Dub...

Re: Eliza Page:Inisparran, Clare, to Warrnambool, Victoria,

Inisparran Island is still known locally as Page's Island. It is now uninhabited but there is a fisherman's hut on the northern shore. Mountshannon (Inis Cealtra) and Whitegate (Clonrush) now form one parish in County Clare. But at times in the past Inis Cealtra and Clonrush were separate parishes i...

Fran,

There are still Nugents in Gurtaderra. Below is link to Archbishop Eugene Nugent, b 1958 in Gortaderra. He is currently Apostolic Nuncio to Haiti.

Good luck with your search.

Re: meaning of "Oge" and "reagh" and "ny" in Irish names

The Irish for daughter is iníon and Ní means "daughter of", rather than referring to the maiden name.
As in, Máire Ní Mhaonaigh = Mary (daughter of) Mooney

Re: niece/nephew = grandchild ?

Paddy, I have seen an occasion where a grandchild, (Winefred O’Donnell, age 7), has been described as a niece of her grandfather (Charles Gallagher, age 70): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Donegal/Church_Hill/Drumnasharragh/1186875/ Here is Winifred ten years later in 1911 (Winnie,...

Re: Cornelius O’Mealey/Conchubhar O Maille

Sheila, Cornelius seems a bit like Mark Twain: Reports of his death have been exaggerated. Thanks for clarifying that each Cornelius was distinct and separate. I came at the post through the O'Dwyer connection and I will also follow Paddy's advice and further explore the Kilshanny land trail. Brendan

Re: Cornelius O’Mealey/Conchubhar O Maille

Hi Sheila, It seems to me that Cornelius Mealey (son of Daniel and Ellen O’Dwyer) had not died before 1901 but had immigrated to the US. According to Family Search he died in 1937. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N3GW-DQ9 The given information throws up another interesting item about Cornelius...

Tullyvargmore and Eastcahirliege

Well done for addition of two more great resources: Ejectment Books, and Freeholders 1768. Is anyone familiar with the placenames, Tullyvargmore & Eastcahirliege, mentioned in the Freeholders 1768 resource? Thanks!

Re: Derrygraney - Where is it?

The Scariff river was also known locally as the Graney. I understood Derrygraney to mean the end of the Graney. Deireadh in Irish meaning "end" or "finish". The townland is adjacent to the river and can be accessed as indicated by taking a right turn off the Mountshannon Road. The last Sheedy to liv...
