Tenements on Griffith's Valuation
Fellow members: Is it possible to do an online search of Griffith's Val'n under the heading of Tenements? This type of search could be used for locating Graveyards, Police Stations, Schools etc. In my case, I am searching for Forges of Co. Clare and their owners.

Re: Parish Records - Transcribers Register
Excellent idea Murf. FYI, I have transcribed the Sixmilebridge parish marriage register for 1829 to 1839. There are 365 marriages in total in the period. I need to view the hard copy here in Sixmilebridge to eliminate some of the doubtfuls before sending the transcription to the library. As far as t...

Re: Kilmaley baptisms 1832-1843, Bridget Fraly
I'm presently going through the Sixmilebridge baptism & marriage registers starting in 1829 with a view to posting them in the Clare Co. library website. It is a slow but fascinating task. The registers include entries by Fr. Cornelius Clune PP (born c. 1770, educated in France) and Fr. Thomas Quinn...

Re: Searching for info on Mary Vandeleur, Sixmilebridge, 183
Hello Kerryn I'm from Sixmilebridge and am reasonably familiar with the Vandeleur family in this part of Co. Clare. In contrast with the Kilrush Vandeleurs, the Sixmilebridge/Newmarket-on-Fergus branch of the family are well regarded. I am unable to answer your specific query but would like to offer...

Re: cratloe a church of ireland parish?
1) Cratloe was not the name of a C of I Parish. There is a Catholic parish called Cratloe which covers the C of I parish of Kilfintenan & the mountainous part of the adjacent C of I parish of Kileely. The remainder of Kileely parish is in Meelick Catholic parish. 2) There was no C of I church in the...

Re: joint responsibility for rent to landlord
This was common. You can see many examples of this arrangement in Griffiths Val. In the attached, under Castlecrine, plot 18 has five occupiers shown tied together with a chain bracket. This is an indication that although the five have been individually assessed, there is a joint obligation to pay t...

Re: Flanagan/Russell/Manning from Sixmilebridge.
Thanks for that message. Both Mary Anne & Luke certainly had short incident-filled lives. Unfortunately on the day of my first reply above, a Mrs Manning here in Sixmilebridge died in her 80s. She was one of the people I had planned on visiting. I spoke to neighbours after the funeral who said that ...

Re: Flanagan/Russell/Manning from Sixmilebridge.
1 family of Flanagans and 3 of Mannings were living in Sixmilebridge area in c. 1850, according to Griffith's Valuation. (As an aside, since Manning is an unusal name in Co. Clare, these 3 families were probably related). The Mannings and Flanagans lived within a half mile of each other, so they wou...

Re: hospital in or near ennis?
Like Declan above, I think it's the Ennis Union workhouse. The severe architectural style of the church and the range of buildings in the background strongly indicate a workhouse. It's the location of the church that makes me think it is the Ennis workhouse. These workhouses were constructed to a st...

Re: roads pre-1830 meelick cratloe coonagh area
On the Clare library website, go to "Historical maps of Co. Clare". Select "Grand Jury maps 1787". Select how you want to view the maps and then select where you want to view. This will show the roads of Co. Clare as they were prior to 1787 and as surveyed by Henry Pelham. It is a fascinating docume...

The following came to me via Peter Wise of the Shannon Archaeological & Historical Society . I realise there is probably a substantial overlap between the members of the Society and this forum. However, I think it is worth repeating. The letter below from the The Genealogical Society of Ireland & th...

Re: Dispensary and Registration Districts
re the "Coolacasey" registration district. My GG parent's marriage and my GF's birth were registered in this district in the early 1850s. I talked to some Cooleycasey locals a while back about where this registration place could be. No-one had any idea. The only official building that existed in the...

Re: Kilkishen National School: Group photograph c.1945
Here's another group photo from Kilkishen N.S. The date is unknown, but possibly pre-independence as the board held by the boys is in English. The alphanumerics under the NS read A84 (or L) and N2. The boys are dressed in a quasi-military type uniform with boots, puttees, heavy duty trousers and jac...
