Thank you, Sheila, that seems to make sense
That honest person was my GGM.
I've been talking to my brother about what I've found, & we're both curious as to the attitude back then to this?

Re: Question about Birth Cert
Thank you all for your considered replies. I really appreciate it. I've just gone through my mother's mountain of paperwork & have found two documents: A 'Statutory Declaration' written by a solicitor that was clearly needed to prove her identity when applying for a passport in the mid-1990s. It was...

Question about Birth Cert
I hope you don't mind if I ask a silly question? My mother has just passed, & we obtained her birth cert. Two mysteries: We always celebrated her birthday on March 23rd. Birth cert has her birthday as 2nd March & registered on 22nd May. Seems a long gap between birth & registration? As well as oddit...

Re: Queally, Quilligan and Quillinan
Kiely is my family name.
I've found at least ten different spellings of Kiely in the records, including 'Kelly'. It's a nightmare.

Dumb question - sponsors & baptism registers
Can I just ask a seemingly dumb question? I have spent more time than is healthy pouring over baptism registers. I have noticed that the sponsors rarely have the same name ie not married. As they are often male and female, do they put a maiden name if it's a married couple, or are the sponsors from ...

Re: Genetic genealogy for surname info
Thank you for the advice Sharon, it's much appreciated, especially about safety and privacy. I find this aspect of genealogy fascinating. Please stop me if I start to bore anyone. I also entered my Ancestry results into GedMatch, which opened a whole new world to me as the Ancestry information is so...

Re: Genetic genealogy for surname info
Thanks for the link!
I took the generic Ancestry test earlier this year and the matches I have are fascinating (to me) but I haven't found the courage to contact them yet.
I'm hopefully going to get my brother to take the Y-DNA test later this year, which will open up a whole new area of research.

Re: New database, eviction cases, now on Library website
Thanks for that explanation, Sharon! I wrote that post late at night having just found the link, and overlooked the date, thinking I had the right Anne, but Owen would be more likely to be the connection. If you see what I mean? My father's family were from Belkelly Purdon. My GGrandmother was Anne ...

Richard Kenna and his Infamous Will
Hello, all. I've become fascinated with this story I found in Australian newspaper archives. I have McKenna links to the area, and my mother mentioned relatives from Australia looking for heirs in Ireland for years, but she related it to my grandfather's branch of the family rather than my Grandmoth...
